The students in the Toronto Sport Leadership – Skating Program will participate in the following certification courses:
In addition, students will participate in skating lessons that have been designed to take non-skaters or weak skaters to the point where they are able to skate with confidence. This will provide an opportunity for students to apply for a position as a Rink Guard in the 2012/2013 outdoor arena season. (Please note: we cannot guarantee that all students will reach the skill level required to meet employment standards).
Students will attend skating lessons at a location close to your school and will be provided with skates and a helmet if the student does not have them or has no means to attain skates or a helmet.
Fundamental Movement Skills
Fundamental Movement Skills is a one day course that includes:
HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Workshop
This one-day workshop will help front-line leaders (anyone working with children aged 6 to 12 – i.e., camp counsellor, coach, swim instructor) improve the quality of programs. Successful candidates will receive a High Five certificate that may be required for future employment.
It provides in depth training in the HIGH FIVE® Principles of healthy child development so front-line leaders understand what they need to do to ensure each child’s social, emotional and cognitive needs are met.
Leaders learn activities and gain knowledge, tips and resources to enhance their programs as well as their relationships with children and other staff members.
At the completion of this workshop, learners will be able to:
Emergency First Aid and CPR – B
Emergency First Aid is supported by the Lifesaving Society. Emergency First Aid and CPR teaches the knowledge of general first aid principles and emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, CPR and choking procedures for children, managing breathing and circulation/bleeding emergencies. This course is a mandatory part of the sport curriculum.
